An information from an America is. reader

The Jan Herman article was, to say the least, interesting---perhaps more from its distortions than from the truth. It relies on the fanatic Paul Krugman's most recent screed in the NY Times. For a devastating analysis of this biased article see the comments in the Powerline blog.

Ongoing interview

Paulo, I just read the last comments of Jan Herman on your text. First of all, I think he was not honest: he has edited your text online for free when you wrote to him (and we can see it in his site) that it was for the press purposes only. What do you have to say on that?

I believe we need to have respect for the work of those who are doing it in an honest way, even if you are not fond of it.
I believe that a writing text is as important as a piece of land someone owes.
I believe that you can be from Europe and be fond of America.
I believe that I do not need to be acquitted because of the acts of my ancestors in the fifteen and sixteen century (if they were guilty of something).
I believe that we can be from a small country and not be upset with that still.
I just believe that America is a symbol of our time and this is what I wrote about.
I believe that there are Americans and also Europeans who can handle that.
I believe that I can be European and do not be acquitted for writing on America; do not be acquitted for writing on the greatness of America.

In "USA TODAY"

From now on you can follow the ongoing interview here in the blog

Aren't you afraid of what people might think of you after America?

America is not a dificult text, but I'm already used to feel like a third
wheel! I think that my unpublished book, Com O Corpo Todo (Full Body), will eventually be harder to read than America. Vício (Vice) is also in many ways a very hard book, not to mention O Mal (Evil)… But seeing that nowadays, in Europe, there is a usual dislike of America (USA), I understand the purpose of your question.
On the other hand, very recently, an important journalist from the German newspaper “Die Welt”, Von Hannes Stein, wrote an article with this title and subtitle: “Nicht schlecht, Chabibi - Im Nahen Osten bricht die Demokratie aus. George W. Bush ist schuld und Europa schweigt” [Not bad, Chabibi - In the Middle East democracy is spreading out. George W. Bush is guilty and Europe remains in silence (seite 7, am 19 März 2005)]. It's crazy but it seems that today, what divides Europe is to be against or for America. Don't we have our own problems besides positions related to America? Who benefits from the fact that we only worry about America? It also seems that what defines your political tendencies is whether you are pro or against America (USA). A straight answer to your question is: I am not afraid of nonsense or prejudice.

New European Online Site Concentrates on Fresh View of America

New European Online Site Concentrates on Fresh View of America

LISBON, Portugal, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- A European online publisher wants to widen European perceptions of America with the launch of a new website America-is.com that focuses only on America and American issues across all subjects. The first text `America' is the latest work of Portuguese writer and poet Paulo Jose Miranda and is written in 99 points ranging from one liners to fuller explanations.
Miranda says: "In Europe, no matter what kind of education you have, when the subject America is brought up, suddenly all intelligence vanishes from the discourse.
"It is as if we in Europe lack a US chromosome. The text America is completely different. It perceives the greatness of America all along in its 99 points."
Already the site is creating interest in the States. An American lady commented:
"I did look at your link and I was really astonished. I have lived in Europe, and every single European I know loves to say how much they hate America, the Americans and the American culture and way of life; and from people I consider extremely educated, intelligent, thoughtful, and un-prejudiced.
"Anyway, then I read your text, and it is something completely different to anything I have ever heard any European say.
"Your perspective seems to be from such a different place - perhaps from the stars or from the Moon or from Mars?? I know you're a writer, but even so: I was just astonished at your insights. I can see why you deserved to win the Jose Saramago Prize! Congratulations!"

America-is.com

1. The duty of every American is to make America grow. And every one who makes America grow is American. In Europe, it doesn’t make sense for a citizen of a country to immigrate to Germany, for instance, and become German, but to come to America and become American makes total sense. Coming to America is in itself already being American. To come to is not to visit; those who come don’t go. America is not a natural country. It’s a created country; an invention of human beings. Since World War I, the story of the world is to come to America.

48. There is hope everywhere. But it definitely grows more in the fertile fields and cities of America. Of necessity, hope grows more where there are more dreams. Hope: that which isn’t pulling that which is; that which is still desired imposing on that which is already had. Hope prevents humankind from falling down from itself.

63. The life of America remains open if we forget to close the refrigerator. The life of America heats up food in two minutes. The life of America is heard from afar. The life of America is seen by all.
